Know the difference
Open gyms, pickup runs and courts
They all mean basketball near you, but they work differently.
Open gym
A scheduled window when a gym, rec center or school opens its court to drop-in players. Usually there is a set time, an entry fee or membership rule, and games form among whoever shows up.
Pickup run
An organized game session, often led by a Host, with a start time, a player cap and a format such as 5v5 to a set score. Spots may need to be reserved or paid ahead.
Basketball court
A place to play, indoor or outdoor. Public courts are often free and first-come, but there may be no organizer, no schedule and no guarantee of a game.

Whether you found a run online or heard about it from a friend, check these details with the organizer or venue.
- Exact address and which entrance or court to use
- Start and end time, and when to arrive
- Cost, payment method and refund policy
- Whether you need to reserve a spot, and the player cap
- Skill level, age rules and game format
- Indoor or outdoor, and what happens if it rains
- Required gear, waivers, ID or membership
- Parking, transit and accessibility
- Who is organizing and how to reach them
